Question: Does anyone else feel this way?

( Back )

Answer #1:

I am only 19 and I feel the same way as you.You can fear what you have not fully experienced. We are destined to die. Society has shaped and brainwashed people into believing that material things are true accomplishments in life. We go to school for half of our lives to succeed in something that we will leave. What exactly do we gain for that hard work??? A life spent in a book and paper that says you have accomplished something. The true journey in life is not how far you can succeed in school, but how happy you truly are. With the society we live in happiness is hard to find. People are all blinded by greed and money and they fail to see the true beauty of life and earth.

Answer #2:

You've basically took the words out of my mouth... and then said them better than I could have

It is a mindless system, that basically requires you to jump through their hoops, so you can get a piece of paper that says you did what they asked. Right now, I'm just trying to get through the rest of high school and can hopefully have some new experiences in college, though I'm expecting it will be like highschool was, just doing as everyone tells you, just so you can say you did it.

Ultimately, I'm going through life with the one hope that I can get a decently paying job, so I can have the cash to go where I want, do what I want and have all the experiences I really want out of life.

Answer #3:

Yes, sometimes, I do feel that way. But you know what? I just get over it. I realize that I'm going to live my life the way I want to, even if it's not acceptable to anyone else. I don't care. I'm going to make myself the happiest I can, and I'm going to seize the day every chance I get. You live your life for YOU, not for anyone else. That's why it's YOUR life. Screw what other people think or say. Do what you want to do. And I'm pretty sure you can live your life the way you want to. Unless you want to kill innocent people for a living, then that is definitely out of the question. Hahah you know what I mean. So go ahead, live your life to the fullest. Hope I helped some. :)

Answer #4:

ye life scares me too!! Sometimes I get really sad thinking about that stuff. Im also afraid of death not my own I dunno its weird. But I do believe in afterlife and God.

Answer #5:

i feel the same way and im only 15. i am afriad of gettting old more so. i am scared because one day i will day and ill feel old and i dont know how to handle that. i see so many old people who have heart attacks strokes and tons of health issues. where they can barely walk or see or hear. where they have to take their teeth out when they sleep. i dont want to experience those things. i am so afraid of my future. i also agree that sometimes i dont get the point of life. i hate the fact that every day we get older, closer to death and i dont want to be the person who is so old and about to die but realise i didnt accomplish anything in my life worth living for. i want to see something in my life thats worth all this fear and pain and anger. at least im not alone but it sure feels like it sometimes.

Answer #6:

I completely agree. I want to be a rock musician when I grow up to have the amazing experience and do what I love and not sit in a stupid cubical, looking at a computer for the rest of my life. I am younger than you, but have anxiety about the future. I say, whatever it is you want to do with your life, go for it. At least you can say you tried instead of wondering "what if" your whole life. Hope this helps!

Answer #7:

We all go through this at some point in our lives. And you said it yourself "Nothing we can ever do will change this." All you can do is make your life what you want. Stop worrying about all these other people, and what they do, and what they did before you. Spending all that time in school for a piece of paper didn't lead to any LOVE, CONNECTIONS, EXPERIENCES? It did for me. Some I still hold dear to my heart, others floundered away making room for better, new experiences. I'm in my 30's now, and honestly, I regret nothing. My life may not be the story book I wanted it to be. Because if it had, I wouldn't know the love a son shows his father. Or the look from my wife that lets me know I'm the only one for her. No one can predict the future, or control it's outcomes. You just steer it in the direction you want to go. No regrets..........

Answer #8:

Answer #9:

wow, i'm 18 and relating to every word you just said...i love seeing someone posting a question like this, since i don't personally know many people who this really concerns especially not in our age...but it's all i ever think about in a way... but if you're talking philosophy - i would like to take this question a little further. in your question you wrote: "Life should be about love, connections, experiences. I would rather die broke and on the side of the road filled with things I've experienced and people I've loved; than to amass all the money in the world and not know what it's like to feel alive."
so in a way, you already seem to know the answer to the question you asked...but how did you get to the conclusion that love and connections are more important than materialism? well, I've gotten to that conclusion too, and i think it's because if you're smart, it's quite easy to realize (especially after experiencing them) that all materialistic pleasures don't bring you true happiness... i found that there is indeed a much higher pleasure in this world that is caused by altruism...and that's ultimately what real love is = pure giving without expecting anything in return...and by doing this, you will feel a more pure and refined - true happiness... but i ask you, why? now what is the point of giving and loving others if they die, and i die, we all die! so what's left? a tum stone that says "loved and gave all his life"? ya it sounds beautiful, but what ultimately is the point of all that giving? i'm happy, he's happy, we're all happy, but why? what will this happiness help us if we all die anyway? so this is what's bugging me...and this takes me back to the purpose of creation... so I've been searching for answers for a couple of years now, and it turns out that the answers to these questions lie in the Judaic mysticism "kabbalah"...so this is what i'm studying now with hope to clarify my main question that everything comes down to "why are we here in the first place?"....but anyway, since you HAVE discovered what REALLY brings true happiness, go ahead and live that way! now this does not mean that getting a job in order to eat and live is not important - but you now have the right proportions. remember: it's all about prioritizing in life. - knowing what you're doing and why, and therefor knowing what really and truly important....

man this answer probably came out a bit mixed up hope you understood
some of what i'm trying to say lol...

anyway good luck! and e-mail me if you'd like to talk about this subject because it interests me to a great deal...

good luck!

Answer #10:

Let's look at this very seriously. The world is full of people with ideas, opinions, rationales, reasons, and with different points of views, and different ways of life. Yet here is the insight into the total conformity, the total conditioning, the drudgery, the falseness. What am i to do knowing this and not knowing how to change? Is it to be different, to be more adventurous, to try harder? Let's think about all of this, and question everything. Question all thoughts, ideas, plans. If I do this seriously, I see I am the thinker. I don't have to go anywhere, do anything; I am the thinker. I am thinking about the world and thinking I am subject to the many parts of the world. I am thinking I have to approach the world through the parts, through the petty fragments. Question all of that. You see, You are the World. That's not to say you are the boss, you are the bully, you are the hero, it is saying holistically you and the whole world are not separate. Living holistically in the present, in the ordinary world, is vital, it is revolutionary.

Answer #11:

Oh man, you are definitely not alone in this.

I'm older than you but I've been struggling with these questions myself for several years now, ever since a close family friend passed away.

I truly believe that people are beginning to change. Commercialism changed the entire world and tried to make people believe that products are the answers. But that's not working so well anymore, since so many people realize that materialism is empty (look at this page!). You will notice more and more people are questioning the way they are told to live. This is the beginning of a wave of change. All great things start small.

Films such as Into The Wild are amazing for being able to open peoples' eyes. They are a tool used to awaken the true heart inside of each of us. Because though there are some that are unhappy with the expectations that the world and family and friends puts on us, there are some who are happy to keep floating on and not think twice about what's going on. It's your opinion which is the better type to be.

Remember that back in the day, getting an education was a privilege. Not many people could, and back in those days people lived shorter lives on average! Perhaps the desire to further your education, and similarly achieve other "standard" goals is simply not for you. Perhaps it's become such a mainstay and norm that the actual meaning behind it is completely lost.

My best friend and I like to joke about diplomas and degrees by saying, "you can't take your degree with you to heaven" when we come across people who seem to be obsessed with getting their piece of paper. However, just because you want to get a degree doesn't mean that's your life. You want a degree so you can afford to go on your adventures. it's not like you're living your life just to go to college :) At the same time, I think it's valuable to pick a field that moves you. Even if it's not necessarily something that makes a load of money. This way you'll be spending your time working but at the same time doing something that you feel passionate about. I got my degree in drawing for pete's sake! :)

The only advice I can give you is to keep doing what you are doing.....asking questions, searching. Maybe there's something that you'll find one day that gives you some comfort and makes you feel differently about life. I'm still searching. it's hard, and it's agonizing at times but there are those moments when the light breaks through and there's nowhere you'd rather be, believe me.

I hope that knowing you're not alone brings you some comfort.

You can also email me if you ever need to talk. It can be hard to find others to talk to about these types of things with because people do not like to think about them.
