Question: How much grant money can I get to start a business?
( Back )
Answer #1:
Based on my past research, as a general rule, grants don't exist for start-up businesses. You will need to get your start-up money either from your own pockets, credit cards, friends, relatives, banks, venture capitalists, or angels. Bank financing includes SBA guaranteed loans. It's also possible to get money by taking your company public. In other words, selling stock in your company to the public, utilizing a stockbroker. There are different avenues for this technique and differing government rules depending on how much money you need.Banks charge interest and you have to pay the money back. Money from venture capitalists and angels doesn't have to be paid back but they get a cut of the action (part ownership of your business) and depending on their percentage of ownership in your business determines the size of the hammer they will have in how your business is run. The money you'd get from a stock sale wouldn't have to be paid back but every stockholder has a percentage ownership in your company based on how many shares of the company they purchased.
I did find this just now, though, so you might be able to find a grant through your state:
